MN Spring from the Nest-Bright White Snow!
April in Minnesota usually includes some snowfall and last night we were delivered with a LARGE dusting. As you can see it is pretty and is just lightly covering the greening up grass field below the nest. This Osprey couple is accustomed to MN spring weather so they don’t seem to be bothered and are continuing their spring parental nesting rituals. Monday’s forecast is for 60 degrees so the snow won’t be hanging around long. The nest is across the road from Sturgeon Lake and along with the Osprey fishing, there have been many HUMANS fishing too. The DNR public boat landings, in close proximity to the nest, both have their docks out. The ice went out EARLIER than normal (DNR says about 2-3 weeks early) in most locations. The OSPREY can fish for whatever species they want, the HUMANS are legally limited on their choices now and will have to wait for MN Fishing Opener Day, which is May 15th. The FROGS are busy croaking…did you know? Why do frogs croak? In most frog species only the males croak. They croak to attract female frogs for breeding, and to warn away other male frogs from their territory. They have been very loud! We also have two pair of geese hanging around the pond and they seem content to only have to share “their pond” with another couple. I also have a pair of ring necked ducks that visit the pond frequently. Fun to see nature’s daily changes . “From the Nest” julie
